Would these need to be sprayed in high temperature paint or would normal spray paint suffice?

Don't know for sure but, I wouldn't want to need to redo the job so, I would go with high temperature paint. The shield is so close, surely radiant heat would get it above the level a normal paint would withstand.

Thought they just used the cheapest coating for these mud shields?

Can’t go wrong with spraying them with calliper paint but given most folk do their brake disc bells in hammerite, I don’t think it’s strictly necessary to use high temp paint.

Probably use a tin of black paint lying around, but of underbody wax on reverse.
