I read an article recently that was talking about eighties cars that did better than expectations and it got me thinking about all of the cars from my youth that I'd lusted after. I never really went down the hot hatch route (other than a fair tepid Fiesta XR2i). Instead I went for Jap-crap like the M1 Toyota MR2 and the Mazda MX6. But I always had a fondness for some of the crackers of my time, such as the Renault 5 GT Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTI, Mk2 Astra GTE and the Mk2 Escort RS Turbo. Those were the hero cars of my youth back in the 80s and early 90s.

Also remember the days before eBay where you'd make a visit to the local scrappy to find new bits for your car. A mate of mine bought a 1.3 Escort and fitted a full XR3i interior into it, including electic windows and sold it for £1300 a year later. The scrappies were often a waste of time, mind you as you'd no idea what you'd find until you got there and had a rummage around.

What's the hero cars from back in your youth?

I had the Series 2 RS Turbo - drove the R5, GTI and GTE. Before that it was a Mk1 Mexico. Then i focused on motorbikes until quite recently.

Louts Sunbeam, HSR Chevette, Manta GTE, Cosworths, tickford / RS3100 capri, RS1800, Cooper S are all names that i lusted after - too many to list

Would i go back to buy one now? NEVER! I will keep my rose tinted glasses on and look back with fondness of a magical age!

Have to agree. I did toy with buying a 205 GTI but I think I'd be disappointed. Besides they're a bloody fortune now! They do still look fantastic though I think.

Always fancied one of these , my cousin had one and a Manta Berlinetta which was hilarious sideways. I had a Peugeot 205 CDTI rapid for a diesel and would keep up with most of the local hoons. Had a couple on Vauxhall Novas back in the day wish still had them now they are silly money.

Had the hot hatches (205, 306) then moved to an Impreza. Always wanted a Toyota Supra and Skyline R34, could never afford the latter, but did eventually have a Supra and an R33 GTR.

And still have a Pug :)

About the time I was passing my test, I seriously lusted after a Lancia Beta MonteCarlo…

I guess the first car that I envied once I had passed my test was the RS1600 Escort they did a few years before the XR3…

Then, the Mk1 Golf GTi was an obvious one for me, seeing as I had a cooking 1,100 cc Golf… Later, it was the Renault 5 GT Turbo… I always preferred that over the Peugeot… and I also liked the V-Tec Civic CRX's... (My brother had one, what a really cracking little car that was)

87, I fell for the homologation specials… Cosworth and M3… I ended up owning and M3 and it was a highlight...

My brother was a mechanic with Vauxhall so it was always those I wanted - had a Nova SR, borrowed my bosses GTE 16v for a week when it was a week old, lusted after a Monza GSE and a Manta GTE. Had a 306 GTI6 at the end of the 90s, loved the Pug 205 GTi, never really a big Ford fan but liked the Capri 2.8i....

Looking at those pics though, its the Audi Coupe (S2?) that I love....

Wow...
But also, there could be people driving and enjoying all those cars that he's hoarding.
Quite agree, I think I have driven some of them more than him, he just likes to tinker more than drive them, but he does have quite a few Supercars as well!

That 935 is nearly finished now, he has thrown 175k at it, its going to be stunning!!

I’ll have the green AMG Coupe please.

I've had that for a day, its a GTR, its a such a planted car, feels big and sounds like thunder, but its an acquired taste looks wise, well to many anyway.

Its Matte dragon green.

I think they look amazing. There’s a guy round our way has one in silver. I’ve only ever seen it drive along at 20-30 mph!
