BMW M340d
It’s been 2005 since I last owned a BMW, the 1 series had not long been launched to a huge fanfare. Mine was a 120i and I need to admit apart from the cramped cockpit (for a 6’2” man) it was a particularly nice brief. The 2.0l naturally aspirated engine sounded great and absolutely held
It’s own. Manual gearbox was decent and engine note with standard pipe was lovely.

Fast forward to 15 years later, loads of generic company cars, 3 Mercs and a mild performance Audi (A5 coupe 252hp 2l turbo petrol Quattro s line). My cars as well as being a passion have to serve a purpose.

Paid for in part by my company I need to be “sensible” I considered EV, I considered PHEV. Both came with a significant upgrade in performance, but also with a substantial reduction in monetary contribution to mileage.

research brought me to the M340d. I did also consider the M340i but BMWs claim for the mileage on the d was a no brainier.

So currently not doing my normal job and around town its returning 40mpg.
3.0l turbo MHEV
0-60 4.5
340 bhp
516lbs/ft

Engine is superb, 0-60 is conservative and torque is phenomenal

officially the fastest production diesel in the world!! IMO it’s going to take someone special to beat this.

have to say best decision I’ve made on a car by far..

Looks good! I had a F31 335d and it was heavily modified as it never drove how I had wanted - did remap, coilovers, ARBs, brakes. It was massively quick and effective, and I did loads of track days in it too. It was such an easy car to cruise for long distances in.
However, the one thing you never change is the throttle response, and that's what stopped it ever feeling like a proper performance car to me. Does the mild hybrid stuff help this in any way?

It so does, at first for some reason it felt old school laggy, you new something was kicking in. Don’t feel it at all now and off the line 700nm is phenomenal. Throttle response in general is quick. Racechip do a throttle tune chip although they not gotten round to the 340d yet!
