Old V8 has been replaced with the same 2litre 4-cylinder unit found in the AMG45 (tuned to 476bhp) with an electrically assisted turbo to reduce lag (and keep it spooling when off the throttle) but also supplemented by a 204bhp electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Combined this creates 680bhp of shove combined with 41mpg. 0-62 happens in 3.4 seconds. The car comes with a 9 speed multi-clutch transmission as standard (there's no manual option) as is four-wheel steering.
With such a complex power train, there's eight different drive modes(!) under the guise of "AMG Dynamic Select" - Electric, Comfort, Battery Hold, Sport, Sport+, Race, Slippery and Individual. Weight distribution is kept in check with some unique battery technology with individually-cooled cells. Speaking of the electric side of things, the electric motor on the rear axle takes car of traction before any ESP system needs to intervene.
Saloon and Estate weight just over two tonnes and both models are lower and wider and longer than the standard C class. No word on a coupe version just yet.
