I must say, 3 months of proper rural living, dealing with a potholed track to the house, Car constantly covered in mud, and I find myself looking at Land Rovers and Ramge Rovers, for the first time in my life.
I do love cars that really know what they’re for, and do it superbly.

It must be getting increasingly more difficult to enjoy the GT4 on the road, as I do!

Potholes
Cracks and lumps
People driving so slowly in shit boxes
Tipper truck drivers that think they are in a GT3
Busy roads
Dash Cams!

Its getting worse!

Glad I’ve read all these. Having had 2 full fat ranges and a Discovery 4 I’ve been considering a 2018 3l diesel Discovery against an X5 of similar vintage.

I’ve been lucky with my Land Rover history, but I always buy with a LR warranty for piece of mind. But the idea of it having more issues than miles is swaying me towards the X5.

I’d say that generally about high performance cars, especially living in Southern England, where there aren’t so many good driving roads, and everywhere is busy.
Dashcams worry me a lot more than speed cameras!
Having moved to Perthshire I am now have stacks of good roads on my doorstep, so that helps. Some crappy road surfaces, but some good ones too.
I loved my M4, but it really was egging me on to drive at silly speeds at times, whereas the GT4 is more engaging at lower speeds. I’ve not had the GT4 out for a drive yet, as it’s not Cup2 weather, but i do wonder if it’ll be just a little too firm for predominantly road use. Last couple of years I did around 10/11 track days each year, so it is is ideal for that kind of thing, but now it’ll be more like 4, with a lot more road miles. Hence partly explaining the 987 Cayman S purchase.

Yes I have had a couple of mates that are going to have to fight a case in court with submitted dash cam footage!

I never really gelled with my M4, I hated the noise it made, and it felt numb, to big and to comfortable, I am also not a fan of "boost" and poor throttle response, its an NA car I appreciate more as I get older!! I bet you get that with the GT4 as well

Really?! 😟
What kind of situation and circumstances?

I really liked the M4, but had to significantly modify it- coilovers, Alcon BBK, equal length midpipe and Remus backbox made it sound incredible.
That made it track capable, but almost too compromised for everyday road use, which really should be its thing given thr size, space, amd practicality. Hence my comment about cars really knowing they’re for. M4 makes sense as an all rounder, but I’ve now got the space for more cars I’m inclined to get things which are amazing at exactly what they’re for, be that a GT4 or a Land Rover.

I modded mine with regards to looks with M Exhaust, 20" wheels and all the carbon, but it sounded terrible, like a bad Karaoke singer with farting noises all the time, (and here's a little rant) what is it with M4 owners that feel the need to boost up, come off the throttle and make it Pwarrrp all the time like its coughing up a grolly! Its not a good noise

Love the looks of the M4, but much prefer my E92 M3, its more entertaining, edgy and makes a great noise!

I have to say I’ve been eyeing up E92 M3s. I think it’s the best looking BMW of all time, and I preferred the way an E90 generation car steered to the newer ones. I only drove a few and it was some years back, but I recall it just being more fun and chuckable than my M4. Slower, but more than fast enough, and sounding great too.

You’ve only just bought the X3! At least give it 6 months before eyeing up LR’s and RR’s! ;)

Currently Mazda, previously many BMW, MB & Audi
We have had about 8 Range Rovers, and we have had trouble with all but 1 (a couple spent more time at the dealer than they did on the road) some minor some major.

Problem is they sell because they are lovely, my wife's current RRS (even though the electric park brake broke and cost a grand) is such a nice place to be and I dont think there is much else like them!
Nail on the head, they're lovely cars, always turn my head when I see them, especially in drug lord black. I love 'em but could never have a modern LR, too much stress. Call me old fashioned but I want a car which is reliable and hassle free, irrespective of the warranty cover.

I think the older ones are worse to be honest! Yeah I went in with my eyes wide open but the indy that we bought from gave us a 2 year RAC warranty with the car for nowt. It only had two owners and had a full LR service history. Didn't make a jot of difference so. We still had some issues, but as long as it's not costing anything to sort them, that's the main thing. The L494 Range Rover Sport is lovely to drive and the fit and finish in them is really much better than many German cars that I've owned. Ours has been solid with zero squeaks or rattles.

They're a modder's wet dream as well. So far, ive put on a body kit, roof rails, painted the calipers, installed an Android Infotainment, Touchscreen climate, rear screens and various other cosmetic bits. When it's working it really is a great car and it only cost me around £27k. So it's a huge amount of car for the money

Having had Discoveries for nigh on 3 years, I’d strongly recommend them. My two 3.0 cars have only had minor niggles and the fact that I jumped on the chance to reject the first one was just using the law to my advantage - I actually don’t know if another manufacturer would have been so supportive in doing that. It’s a very long and detailed story, so won’t go through it all here.

The second has had the “they all do that” tailgate rub and minor tech niggles. I once thought a heated mirror had failed but that was due to a cracked (heated) windscreen taking out the left side circuit.

It has tolerated completely inappropriate use for a big diesel - short runs constantly.

The thing with them, though, is that if you ‘get’ them then there is no comparison. A BMW SAV doesn’t give you what a LR/RR does and vice-versa. I almost bought an X7 when rejecting the first Discovery. There were many things I preferred about the BMW and many things I preferred about the Discovery. Only one of them felt like a proper SUV though. Whether you were walking up to it, climbing into it, shutting a door, enjoying the high driving position, the Disco had the edge. It really does depend what you want from a car.

This isn’t an LR good/BMW bad post, just that they are very different offerings. Perhaps like comparing a Cayman/911 and a M2/4/8. One brand is more focused and specialised.

Chap I know works at JLR and it is not surprising that quality is so iffy. They are given so little time to attach each part and berated if they don’t hit their quota. Other manufacturers who visit can’t believe how fast everything is which is why they have quality issues.
