The M5 is pissing me off.

I really love everything about it apart from the brakes. They’re back to squeaking all the time. Tried everything apart from looking at the rears. Would be amazed if it’s them but I’ll look at them tomorrow.

At the same time I’m thinking I might get rid and run a G80 M3 for a year till the Taycan arrives. I’m also looking at R8s but it seems madness to have one those and the TTS at the same time. Makes more sense to replace the TTS with an R8 at some point when I’m ready to swap it.

Other option is just to grin and bear the brakes on the M5 for another year because there is nothing out there that comes close for the money. I’m not going to shell out the cash to convert it to steel brakes so it’s either keep it and put up with it or change for something else.

Decisions…

Have you tried bedding them in again?

Multiple times. Contrary to advice on the internet, they seem to get worse as they heat up, rather than the other way around. I've stripped and cleaned them three times, changed the pads, used the Porsche shims, used anti-squeak paste. Nothing works. They start off fine and gradually get worse and worse. The car was sitting in the sun yesterday whilst at work and when I drove off, the thing was squealing like a pig until I got up to about 35 mph.

The Porsche shims worked for a while but after that, it was as if I'd never fitted them.

I've got it booked into a specialist next month and yesterday I stripped cleaned and applied anti-squeal paste to everything on the fronts. I'm going to strip, clean and paste the rears today just to rule them out, but I'd be amazed if they are the culprit.

I'm at the point I'm wondering if one of the discs is warped as when driving its a constant squeak-squeak-squeak but that's when it's at its very worst and thankfully doesn't happen all the time, other times it's when I'm turning at slow speeds at a certain angle. But then surely if it was a warped disc it would be constant all the time and it isn't.

I’m in my local dealer right now getting my mirror caps replaced under warranty.

Apparently everything I’m experiencing is perfectly normal and it’s driving style, mileage and blind luck that determines the frequency and volume of the noises I’m describing and I’ve been handed this….

Service advisor tells me that BMW can’t fix it and so they’re dishing out leaflets instead.

That’s really poor and unacceptable. BMW should engineer a correct solution or don’t bother. Steels would be a better solution as but your are then stuck trying to sell those on as a small market for M5 parts. If work on rear brakes doesn’t cure it and BMW confirm disc is true then move it on. Hate squealing brakes.

I’ve just finished on the rears. The pads have plenty of life in the them but the backing plates, especially the inner one on the drivers side rear are plenty corroded. Especially around the lugs.

I’ve wired brushed all the corrosion, cleaned and lubed everything with anti-squeal paste as well.

It was a struggle to get that pad out. I’m crossing all my fingers and toes that it might have been a bit sticky but I fully expect to be disappointed.

Well lads I don’t want to speak too soon but I just took it out for a hard run and it was silent the entire time. On the brakes and off. One other thing that I did differently today is that I noticed that the brake fluid was above max so I took some of it out. Not sure how much of an impact that made.

A good barometer is that when I get home and pull into my drive, as I turn in it usually always squeals. Didn’t do it tonight. I’ll be so happy if I’ve finally cracked it. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Well, so far so good. Took my youngest to the football and back. Car was silent. But just to through a spanner in the works, dealer called me to say that they can do me a fairly good deal on an IOM green M3 with full carbon kit and carbon bucket seats. I'm tempted, if the numbers work.

That's great news about the brakes, they are renown for speaks and sequels so expect it to return!

I am not keen on that green, and to be honest everyone I have seen out and about has been that colour!

To be honest I really dont mind squeaks and squeals that happen when braking ,that can be gotten rid of when you take the car out for a hammering. It's more about all the noise when you're not on the brakes. As the for the M3, I really wasn't into that colour at first either but its grown on me. Don't see many G80s in my neck of the woods and certainly none in that colour. It's a bit rare up here. I'm serious tempted on by it. Going to look at the numbers today and make a decision.

I was looking at an M4 in that colour just 30 minutes ago in B&Q car park, did not have the carbon seats though, they are a must have!

Looks like a lovely spec, side shirts and rear spats are a bit much, giving a bumper car look! I am not going to be popular, but I prefer your M5, and that colour is a no from me!

They are supposed to be a great drive though mate!

Whatever happens the M5 is on borrowed time so I'm factoring that into my thinking. I'm not mentally over the line yet but I'm close.

Get yourself out in a v10+ R8 mate, it’s such an event every time and the noise with the right exhaust is just child like grin time 😁

Been looking at those also but I think it makes more sense to replace the TTS with one of those in a year or two. I need a practical car for child-ferrying purposes! Anyway, having run the numbers and with the Taycan on the way, it only makes sense for me to change if I couldnt stand to put up with the brakes on the M5 anymore and I looks like I might just have finally cracked it, so it's here to stay. Back to plan A, which is to be content with what I have and maybe swap the TTS for an R8 later on down the line.

The M5 can't be beaten for what it is - a fat fast saloon, so you have to change big I've found and not sure the M3 does it.

I don't want to go to two seats, or two useless seats, so I really am finding it a problem, making me think I'll keep it, but get another fun car alongside it - we've been here before haven't we :D

My wife doesn't drive, so two cars is a bit of a luxury.
