Been looking at these on Autotrader. I really want one!

...and almost a year later, I finally got one.

After drooling over @Che's car and with the departure of the M5, it left me in a position to spend a bit more on a weekend project car. the TTS is pretty much perfect both cosmetically and mechanically and in terms of ownership and service history. It really set the bar high for a replacement. I honestly still feel a bit torn about moving the TTS on. It really is one of my favourite cars and is one of the best examples of any car I've ever owned.

That made me even more cautious when it came to R8s. I had assumed that cars in this bracket must surely all be enthusiast owned and well-cared for, but the reverse is true. In hunting for a good example, I've never come across so many poor ones in any other time I've been looking for a car.

In the closing stages it came down to two, sensibly priced V10+ models. One white with bucket seats and a Capristo exhaust and the red one with standard comfort seats that I ended up with. The white one had a patchy service history with no evidence of particular work having been carried out. The red one had a perfect main dealer service history, only 5 owners (compared to the 8 that the white one had) and was up for sale by a professional detailer in Essex who had done a great job on the paint work, PPF'd the blades and lower side sections and added a CarPro ceramic coating. Carpro is the brand that I usually have applied my to cars and in a further coincidence it turns out the that detailer round the corner from me (who I've been using for years) is the exclusive UK agent for CarPro's professional range. If you're a detailer in the UK and you want Prof CarPro products, he need to buy them from him. He knows the guy I bought the R8 from and gave him a glowing report.

So for a private sale, I think I had all the bases covered and the car looks fantastic. It's completely stock inside and out. Here's an instagram vid that the previous owner did:

There's a few jobs need done to bring it up to where I need it to be.

Interior trim
Couple of bits need attention. Passenger door handle clips are broken so I'm going to replace the part that the carbon handle clips into. A couple of other bits had been poorly installed. The owner before last, had installed wing-back seats and then put the originals in when he came to sell it to Alex at AWC, who I bought it from and in doing so had missed out a couple of bits (found in the glove box) and hadn't bolted the passenger seat down properly (so it was rattling on my journey home). The battery access cover was broken (common fault) so I've already fixed this.

Battery
I reckon it's on its first ever battery by the looks of it, so I've got a new uprated one arriving tomorrow as I notice it's a big sluggish to start up sometimes. Especially if the stereo is already on or I've pressed the window button. There's a fair bit of trim needs to come out to do that so that's a job for the weekend (new one arrives tomorrow).

Infotainment
The Audi MMI unit is really dated. It doesn't even have bluetooth music streaming, DAB etc or even Carplay. However at this age, the unit doesn't integrate with the cars systems the way that modern infotainment units do so, it's easy to replace. I got a Pioneer SPH-DA360DAB dual DIN head unit that turned up today and I'm now just waiting on a custom trim kit and wiring harnesses from RTA Fabrications to arrive so I can fit it all.

It'll look something like this when I'm done:

What's coming?
  • I'm not a fan of the titanium trim on the Plus model, so that'll all be getting changed to gloss black. I've got a full set of gloss black badges on order as well. I'll probably do a gloss black honeycomb grill as well.
  • The car has a carbon fibre front and rear splitter, but I really like the Maxton kit, especially the side skirt addons so I'll probably look at these. Seems a shame to ditch the carbon OEM front one but I'd just keep it for re-sale.
  • The car needs an exhaust or exhaust-mod 100% so that's something that I'll need to address.
  • Red seat belts
  • Royal Steering wheels to get the wheel re-done and also a matching airbag cover I think.
  • I fancy getting some of the interior retrimmed in a combo of black leather and alcantara with red stitching.
  • Definitely something seat-related but I'd say those are bottom of the list now as the stock ones are much better than I thought they would be and are in excellent condition. I can't actually believe how tidy they are.
  • Spacers I think
  • Wheels - They really suit the car in gloss black but do I want both of my cars to have black wheels...hmm 🤔

First impressions
The thing feels solid as a rock. Build quality is off the scale. The car feels "tight" in everything it does. Cornering is great. It doesn't drive like an Audi at all. It's quite easy to get the back end out. Surprising for a Quattro car. Power delivery is lovely. OEM exhaust is a bit muted, especially in normal mode with the valves closed.

I have to say that this feels like no other car I've ever owned apart from my old Mk1 Toyota MR2, that was mid-engined as well. The drive really feels like an event and the cabin, though definitely old school, is still a very pleasant place to be. Loving it so far!

Huge congrats mate, really pleased you’re happy and have found the right one. It’s already stunning but I’m sure by the time you’re done it will be even better.
Completely agree about the build and the drive, its very un Audi, it should be considering the Lamborghini relationship 😁
I had the same issues finding a good one, if you keep them right you’ll be in a good position come sale, I was approached a few months ago to sell even though it’s not for sale, 2.5 years in and no regrets 👍
Enjoy and keep the updates coming!

Wrong gen but here’s a bit of the same red (and blue) r8 porn the previous owner of mine did 😁

New battery fitted after work today. The one in the car was definitely past its best. Replaced the 68AH with a 100AH monster and properly coded to the battery management system so that the car knew it was a new and bigger battery. Lot of confusion over the term "battery coding". You're not coding the battery at all. All you're doing is making sure that the car uses the right charging profile to suit a newer battery rather than an old one.

Battery change is a bit of a mission on these cars...

Starting with the wee jobs. Mostly just making things as they should be.

So far I've I've steam cleaned the interior and under the bonnet. I've lubed up all the seals as well. The rear passenger-side panel near the spoiler feels ever so slightly loose compared to the other side, so I'm going to have a look at that tomorrow. Maybe a screw or clip that isn't fully engaged I think.

Still waiting on a set of black V10 badges arriving but did the front and rear today. Goes much better with the colour scheme.

Gloss black PPF on the roof would set it off a treat. Congratulations on the new purchase, looks amazing.

Have to say, I've never really been sold on that. Been on the fence a few times and was contemplating it again recently.

Disconnected and tapped off the vacuum pipe from the exhaust valve so that it stays open all of the time. This will give a bit of a deeper sound until I get a proper exhaust sorted.

Gloss black V10 badges arrived today to complete the all black look. Ordered some wheel spacers today and I’m waiting on a quote from the bodyshop to paint my grey bits.

Booked it in for service. It’s due in November but I might as well get off on the right foot with this.

Oil Change, S-Tronic Oil, Brake Fluid, Spark Plugs and MOT. £1500 😱 at the stealers. Got to keep up the main dealer history…

Be wary of the brake nipples, lincoln Audi did me for nearly £500 to get the 3 seized ones replaced. They then tried to do me for another best case £200, worst case £1300 to sort out the pad wear sensor warning light that wouldn’t go off.
I got it home and isolated which wheel it was, cleaned the connector loom/sensor pins with electrical contact cleaner and sorted it myself. Cost £5.
They we’re trying to get me to replace sensors and looms!

You’ve got the big service unfortunately but for the following 3 years you’ll be looking around £500 to £750 per annum 👍
